Southwest Airlines is launching new nonstop services from Houston Hobby Airport and AirTran Airways will add nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and San Juan in Puerto Rico, as well as new routes from Denver.
In addition, AirTran will expand its international presence with four new nonstop routes to Mexico. AirTran will begin service from San Antonio to Cancun and Mexico City beginning in May, and from John Wayne Orange County Airport in California to Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City beginning in June.
AirTran Airways has a total of 117 Boeing 737-700s in service and on order and numerically will be the most important type in AirTran's fleet for the foreseeable future. (The airline also operates 88 Boeing 717s but has indicated it may start disposing of some older 717s in the next few years.)
AirTran operates its 737-700s in two-class configuration, with 12 premium-class seats and 125 economy-class seats
The Mexico services are subject to government approval and are not yet for sale. Specific frequencies and fares for AirTran’s new international routes will be announced once the appropriate approvals are received.
AirTran does not currently serve Orange County. Southwest Airlines says the future introduction of AirTran Airways service to these markets is a direct result of Southwest’s acquisition of AirTran.
