McMillins beat the Baja 1000

The father/son team of Andy and Scott McMillin on Saturday won the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 for the second time in three years, completing the 705-mile loop course in 14 hours, 51 minutes and 36 seconds while averaging 47.12 mph.
Andy McMillin, the 24-year-old son of Scott McMillin, started and finished in Ensenada, while his 51-year-old father drove the 250-mile middle section in the team’s Ford F-150 Trophy Truck.
“That was the most intense race I’ve ever been a part of,” said the younger McMillin of the 30-second distance between him and his closest competitors front and rear for much of the race. “It was a freight-train free-for-all. It was such a blast. It was so much fun. I’m glad to win my second Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 with my dad. It means a lot.”
Scott McMillin said: “He gave me the roughest part to drive. It kicked my butt.”
The McMillins have been racing in Baja for 35 years. Patriarch and team founder Corky McMillin, Scott’s dad and Andy’s grandfather, passed away in 2005 but the family keeps going.
This year’s race was interrupted almost before it could start when a local construction big-rig truck jack-knifed, rolled and blocked the course, necessitating a delayed start five miles down the course for the Trophy Truck class.
In the two-wheeled category, it was--surprise--a Honda that finished first with the team of Kendall Norman, Quinn Cody and Logan Holladay sharing riding duties on the No. 1x JCR Honda Racing CRF450X. And once again, it was the bikes that beat the four-wheelers to the finish.
