San José del Cabo

Charming is the one word that can best describe San Jose del Cabo, an appropriate description when one considers the historic center’s old buildings and the majestic presence of the Parroquia San José church and the hospitable atmosphere of the main plaza. Old customs and traditions are alive here and time seems to fade.

Cortes was the first to explore the region in 1535, and in 1730, San Jose del Cabo was officially founded as a mission. The cities rich and colorful history includes pirates, Jesuit missionaries and Indian uprisings.

San Jose del Cabo is the county seat of Los Cabos.

San Jose del Cabo has a population of approximately 40,000, and offers a high quality lifestyle, with very little crime. It is an unusually clean city with a variety of neighborhoods, some new and some that are very old, with the new growth spreading to the north and west of the historic center. The very first golf course in southern Baja is located here, with many nice homes built around it. Jobs are here for anyone who wants to work.
On the southeast edge of the city is a beautiful protected estuary covering a sizable area, with over 100 species of birds along with a variety of turtles, fish and some exotic marine mammals. ATV and Kayak tours of the estuary are available.

A residential development, known as Puerto Los Cabos, is underway including a 535 slip marina. The master plan calls for a extensive new resort community where the village of La Playita is now located. The plan will integrate the existing village, mission/museum, ecological/culture park, luxury residences, fishing, and two championship golf courses.

The lay out of San Jose del Cabo is not what you would expect, with the downtown area located about a mile from the beach, and what you might think of as the main beach, in the hotel zone, isn’t really that popular, nor safe much of the year. The most popular beach is at Costa Azul, an area of resort condos, and at the west end of this beach is San Jose’s popular surfing breaks. East of San Jose is La Playita, home to the popular panga fleet, and east of La Playita is East Cape and miles of deserted beaches, a stretch shoreline gaining in popularity with each year.

If its peace and quite with a strong sense of traditional old world culture and tradition, then San Jose del Cabo is for you.
